The origins of Castile soap go back to the Levant, where Aleppo soap-makers have made hard soaps based on olive and laurel oil for millennia.

It is commonly believed that the Crusaders brought Aleppo soap back to Europe in the 11th century, based on the claim that the earliest soap made in Europe was just after the Crusades, but in fact in the first century AD the Romans knew about soap.

Castile soap managed to establish such popularity because the Spanish city of Castile had an abundance of olive oil, which was a crucial ingredient used in the production of this high-quality soap. While the original recipe for Aleppo soap required laurel oil, this type of oil was in short supply; however, the city of Castile had easy access to olive oil and that enabled the creation of a pure white soap that was very mild and effective. The whiteness was seen as purity, which made it very popular with Spanish royalty.

Castile Soap is a vegetable-oil based soap, traditionally olive oil, and does not contain any animal fats. It is considered to be an all-purpose soap, and can be used as an overall body cleanser, a pet shampoo, a laundry detergent, a liquid dish detergent, and even a hard surface cleaner when diluted. Because Liquid Castile Soap is free of harsh chemicals, such as SLS, it is considered to be more environmentally friendly than most store-bought detergents. Shake before use.
