Green Hills Foods Roasted Carob Powder Carob comes from the pod of a tree that grows along the Mediterranean Sea, especially in the eastern and southern area of Spain and Morocco. Consumed since ancient times, it is also known as Saint John’s Bread or locust bean. The pod contains a sweet, edible pulp.
Once dried and roasted, the pulp is ground into a powder. It's similar to cocoa powder in color and can be substituted one-for-one in recipes, but carob is unique with its own special flavor and texture. It's sweet, mild and packed with pectin, a soluble fiber. Carob Health benefits also includes Vitamins – K, E and riboflavin, and mineral content, like calcium, zinc, potassium, phosphorous, as well as its natural antioxidants.
Carob has a wide variety of health benefits, including its ability to boost the immune system, may reduce the risk of cancer - particularly those related to cervical cancer, improve digestion, slow down aging, prevent cardiovascular diseases, and is commonly used by person with diabetes. It is believed that Carob may help to reduce the risk of diabetes.*
In comparison to regular chocolate, carob has considerably less sugar, a fraction of the fat content, and only 1/3 of the calories. It can help manage spikes in blood sugar levels. This is why it is so often used as a replacement for chocolate in various cultures, because it also provides protein and fiber that chocolate lacks. This makes carob helpful for people trying to lose weight, without depriving their sweet tooth of some chocolate on occasion. It is also worthwhile mentioning that chocolate has some caffeine and theobromine, both of which are stimulants and can be addictive while carob has no caffeine or other stimulants. For these reasons, and more that are still being researched, why carob is widely used throughout the world today.
