Tahini also known as sesame seed butter a condiment made from toasted ground hulled sesame seeds. Sesame (Sesamum indicum) is a flowering plant in the genus sesamum, also called benne. Numerous wild relatives occur in Africa and a smaller number in India. It is widely naturalized in tropical regions around the world and is cultivated for its edible seeds, which grow in pods or "buns". Sesame seed is one of the oldest oilseed crops known, domesticated well over 3000 years ago. Sesame has one of the highest oil contents of any seed. With a rich, nutty flavor, it is a common ingredient in cuisines across the globe.

Tahini sesame butter is a source of calcium, manganese, amino acid, omega -3 and omega -6. It is believed that sesame seeds and, thus, tahini have similar immune-boosting, cardiovascular-protective abilities to superfoods like olive oil, walnuts and flaxseeds.*

Tahini's butter is also high levels of calcium and protein make it a useful addition to vegetarian and vegan diets, as well as to raw food diets when eaten in its unroasted form. Compared to peanut butter, tahini has higher levels of fiber and calcium and lower levels of sugar and saturated fats.*

Tahini made from raw sesame seeds is lower in fat than tahini made from roasted seeds.*
