Caraway also known as meridian fennel and Persian cumin, is a biennial plant in the family Apiaceae, native to western Asia, Europe, and North Africa. The plant is similar in appearance to other members of the carrot family, with finely divided, feathery leaves.
The seeds, usually used whole, have a pungent, anise-like flavor and aroma that comes from essential oils, mostly. It is also an excellent source of minerals like iron, copper, calcium, potassium, manganese, selenium, zinc and magnesium. Caraway seeds are mostly used as a spice in baking, desserts liquors and cooking.
- Use caraway seeds to improve the taste of certain vegetables. Put a teaspoon of caraway seeds into a piece of muslin.
- Sprinkle over roasted vegetables. Potatoes and sweet potatoes are good choices.
- Add caraway seeds to baked apples.
- Use caraway seeds with baked goods.
- Mix caraway seeds into cheese dips.
