Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a flowering plant whose rhizome, ginger root or ginger, is widely used as a spice, and in alternative medicine. Ginger originated in Asia, the Spanish in turn, transported it to Jamaica in the early 1700s. Since then, Jamaica is known as the source for the finest ginger in the world, with Christiana, Manchester, being identified as the geographical location where the world’s best ginger is grown.
As a spice, ginger is used in the kitchen for baking, cooking and many other myriad of uses. In alternative medicine, ginger is used due to its medicinal values. Ginger possesses a high level of gingerol, a substance with powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Ginger is also rich in carbohydrates, dietary fiber and protein, sodium, iron, potassium, magnesium, vitamin C and B6. 1.5 grams of ginger is believed to help prevent various types of nausea, morning and sea sickness.*
