Blue Vervain is an old herbal remedy that is said to relieve respiratory and liver congestion, cleanse toxins and act as a general tonic that produces an overall feeling of well-being. It is believed to be one of the best nerve herbs in the entire herbal kingdom. It is a great anti-spasmodic herb and a muscle relaxer.

 

It soothes and builds damaged nerves, and often used to relieve nervous coughs, anxiety, fever pains of a nervous origin and insomnia. Blue Vervain can prove effective for maintaining oral hygiene and dental health, as it treats bleeding gums, mouth ulcers and gingivitis. In women, this herb is thought to promote menstruation, reduce cramping, and increase the production of breast milk after childbirth. As an herbal expectorant, it helps to loosen and expel phlegm from the throat and chest. It is considered one of the best herbs to help alleviate the onset of a cold, especially with upper respiratory inflammation of the lungs. In ancient times, it was used for treating fever, diarrhea, and gout.

 

This herb is said to possess sedative, antispasmodic, stimulant, analgesic, anti-bacterial, emmenagogue, vulnerary, hypotensive, astringent, vermifuge, galactagogue, sedative, alterative and diuretic properties. Modern uses of the herbal extract are as a relaxing nervine with a particular affinity for the digestion, the liver, and gallbladder. It is also a very helpful herb in convalescence and recommended in cases of ME and post viral fatigue. It has a calming effect and most helpful for those are exposed to prolonged stress and strain.

 

Contraindications: No adverse effects of Blue Vervain have been reported to this date. However, Blue Vervain should not be used during pregnancy, as it may be a uterine stimulant. Overuse (many times the recommended dosage) may cause vomiting, but small doses are thought to relieve gastric irritation.
